Eco-Design — Marc van Bekkum

We want to protect our environment… but our closest environment is our home. In the old days furniture and houses were made from 100% natural materials… now we can build them using chemical materials. The use of those materials has consequences for our health: allergies, chronic diseases and cancer.

Mankind needs nature, but nature thrives without mankind. This means we have to cooperate with nature.

Eco-Design is constructing in harmony with nature, to create comfort and a healthy environment in our house, and to save energy.

Tradition meets design

Genuine materials are my passion and I like to reclaim used objects. It gives me pleasure to design or redesign objects and spaces with reclaimed wood, or use different techniques to adapt raw materials and objects, they create a rustic design. Their organic shapes are often pieces of art by themselves, and combined with lots of natural light, make lovely rooms in which you can breathe and feel well.

Love for life, art and nature helps me to create things that actually contribute to this beautiful planet.

The beginning of Studio B3KM

Love for woodworking made me start Studio B3KM (pronounced: Studio Beckham) in 2009. The houses I grew up in were of contemporary interior design. My father taught me the skills of DIY, and was a great lover of design. When he saw that I shared this passion, he arranged a meeting for me with his friend, interior designer Benno Premsela. When Benno explained the profession, during lunch at his huge table (together with members of the national ballet!) I decided there and then that my future was in interior design and architecture. My grandfather was an architect, and my uncle still is. But in the years that followed, the band I played with got famous, and I became a professional musician. This work left me lots of daytime for creativity and DIY. When I had to stop making music because of tinnitus in 2006, I moved to France with my family and started working for master carpenter M. Ladirat. He taught me the profession of roof carpentry and authentic renovation as well as the history of tools, materials and the region. In 2009 I combined all that with my environmentally conscious lifestyle and started B3KM EcoDesign, that evolved into Studio B3KM when the focus got mainly on furniture and design.
